One year after going on a hunger strike, Tanzanian singer and former Tusker Project Fame contestant Peter Msechu is celebrating a major milestone in his weight loss journey. Msechu has lost 27 kilos after undergoing gastric bypass surgery. In a candid chat on Twitter space dedicated to healthy living, Msechu opened up about his lifelong struggle with weight. He blamed much of it on poor eating habits he developed in his youth. "When I was young, I used to tell my parents that I would buy my bags of rice so that I could eat the way I wanted. I saw this as a very valuable thing, but in the long run, it made me gain a lot of weight," he said. At his heaviest, Msechu weighed 184 kilograms. He says his diet, which often included three plates of rice, beans, and chips in a single meal, as well as a love of sugary foods, contributed significantly to his weight gain. The singer admitted that his eating habits were so ingrained that he even found himself competing with his children for their food. "It got to a point where when I saw my kids getting good food, I wanted that food, and it ended up causing me health problems. After all the struggles, I now have one meal a day at 5 pm and it doesn't even fill a cup. My child eats more than I can" he said. In January 2023, Msechu was one of several obese patients who received an intragastric balloon. The intragastric balloon is a non-surgical weight loss procedure designed to help people lose weight by reducing the capacity of the stomach. Initially, the procedure helped him lose 30 kilos. However, after the balloon was removed, Msechu regained the weight he had lost. In August 2023, Msechu reached a breaking point and went on a two-week hunger strike while in hospital.
