The annual Nairobi Burger Week is back, with over 200 participating restaurants offering irresistible deals to burger lovers across Nairobi. A highlight of this year’s event is the introduction of bean-based burgers, providing a tasty and healthy alternative to traditional beef burgers. This new menu addition aims to transform Kenya's culinary landscape by encouraging the incorporation of beans into various dishes, promoting healthier and more sustainable food choices. Organized by EatOut, the event will feature a collaboration with Beans is How (BiH), bringing the #BeansOnTheMenu initiative to life. “We are thrilled to partner with Beans is How to bring the #BeansOnTheMenu initiative to life during Nairobi Burger Week. This collaboration not only celebrates the culinary creativity of our chefs but also promotes healthier and more sustainable food choices for our community,” said EatOut Director Mikul Shah. The initiative seeks to elevate beans as a way to encourage healthier and more sustainable food choices. The initiative will feature a series of events, meal promotions, and educational programs. BiH Campaign Director Kristin Gutekunst said that beans are a climate-smart powerhouse of nutrition, but they need a rebrand. “By incorporating them into popular dishes like burgers, and partnering with EatOut and top restaurants, chefs, and influencers across the country, we can get people excited about this humble but incredible food group. We are thrilled to be embarking on a shared journey with EatOut to support the transformation towards more sustainable, healthy diets in Nairobi and beyond,” said Gutekunst. Beans are a nutritional powerhouse, rich in protein, fiber, and vitamins and minerals including potassium, iron, and B vitamins like folate. They are also a sustainable crop, able to fix nitrogen into the soil, requiring less water and generating a smaller carbon footprint compared to other protein sources. By integrating beans into their menus, restaurants can offer healthier choices to their patrons while supporting local farmers and contributing to environmental conservation. Participating restaurants will feature unique bean-based burger creations on their menus, making beans more visible, accessible, and exciting. Renowned chefs will join the challenge, creating innovative and mouth-watering bean-based dishes that highlight the culinary potential of beans. Informative materials, cooking demonstrations, and interactive events will educate chefs, food service managers, and consumers about the many benefits of beans. “Beans are a humble yet powerful ingredient, capable of transforming a dish with their rich flavors and nutritional benefits. This collaboration allows us to reimagine the classic burger, infusing it with elegance and depth.
