Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly addressed concerning issues within his office, including disrespect from security agencies and the mysterious shooting of a former National Intelligence Service (NIS) officer.
Shooting Incident
Gachagua revealed that he had hired a former senior NIS official to help tackle alcohol and drug abuse. This officer was shot by an assailant on a motorcycle while leaving his home in Kileleshwa. Fortunately, the bullet missed his head and hit his shoulder. He was treated at Nairobi Hospital, but Gachagua expressed frustration that the incident was not taken seriously by security authorities. "To this day, that assassin who was sent to intimidate me and my staff has never been investigated," he said.
Concerns Over Harassment
Gachagua described the treatment he and his associates have faced as unprecedented. He criticized security officials for their poor handling of recent protests, stating they relied on false narratives rather than understanding the underlying issues.
"The Gen Z protests were sparked by the collective anger of all Kenyans because they felt their leaders were not listening," he noted. He also mentioned that security officials only asked his staff a few questions during their investigation, which left him feeling that the inquiry was inadequate.
Confronting President Ruto
Gachagua disclosed that he confronted President Ruto about the actions of the security agencies, reminding him of their commitment not to use these agencies for political intimidation. He shared an incident involving MP Benjamin Gathiru, who was intercepted by police and had his phone confiscated. Gachagua expressed concern that he and his associates are under constant surveillance.
Call for Change
The Deputy President warned security officials against using tactics from previous governments, emphasizing the need to respect citizens' rights. He stated, "I told the President... we should not spill the blood of Kenyans." Gachagua hopes that security chiefs will heed the call to stop these harassment tactics, highlighting a significant rift within the government that could have serious implications.
