Misidentification in Anti-Finance Bill Protests
In Kenya, protests against the 2024 Finance Bill led to clashes between demonstrators and police. During the protests, some individuals broke into the parliament, prompting the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to start investigations and ask for the public's help in identifying the suspects.
Pastor Dennis Basweti's Ordeal
Among those identified was Dennis Basweti, a preacher from Kisii. However, Basweti was wrongfully accused. He explained to TUKO.co.ke that he was in parliament on an invitation from South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro. Basweti's image was mistakenly taken from a TikTok video where he was seen speaking into a microphone in parliament.
Clearing His Name
After seeing his image among the suspects, Basweti went to the DCI offices in Kisii. He showed the officers the video that caused the confusion, and they found it amusing. The officers contacted their colleagues in parliament, and Basweti is expected to travel to Nairobi to clarify the situation.
No Legal Action
Despite the mistake, Basweti stated he would not take legal action against the DCI. He expressed disappointment that proper investigations were not conducted before his face was published.
Police Actions
In related news, the police are pursuing youths recorded stealing during the protests. Videos show the suspects breaking into cars and businesses, causing significant losses. One clip even shows a man being ambushed and robbed by violent youths.
