Jackie Matubia, a well-known actress and mother of two, has openly shared her life's journey, revealing the struggles and triumphs that have shaped her.
Early Life and Family Challenges
Jackie Matubia's childhood was filled with constant changes. She moved between living in London with her father and in Kawangware with her mother, who had remarried. These frequent relocations made it difficult for Jackie to form stable relationships. "I was a very quiet child because of the change. I used to block people out," she recalls. Attending Lavington Academy, she was often perceived as a quiet and strange girl, which led to incidents like cutting another girl's hair out of frustration.
Academic Struggles and Discovering Drama
Jackie didn't perform well academically, scoring around 200 marks in her KCSE. However, she found her passion in drama at Gathirimo High School. In 2008, she became the first Form One student to join the drama club. Her talent was recognized by Miss Morgan, a set book actor, who later helped her secure a role on the popular TV show 'Tahidi High.'
Marriage, Motherhood, and Career Challenges
In 2014, Jackie met her first husband, Kennedy Paul, and they had their first child in 2015. They married in 2016, but balancing motherhood and her career proved difficult. "Life as a mother began. I wanted to go back to acting," she said. Despite her efforts, finding opportunities after 'Tahidi High' was tough, and her marriage eventually fell apart after seven years.
Jackie realized she had been neglecting her own happiness to please others. "I was a people pleaser," she reflected. After separating from her husband, Jackie faced financial struggles and even depression, especially when her personal troubles went public during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Career Revival and New Challenges
Jackie's career saw a revival when she joined the TV show 'Zora' in 2021, thanks to a call from Sarah Hassan. During this time, she fell in love again and became pregnant. However, the relationship ended, leaving Jackie to raise her child alone once more. "My darkest year again was 2023 when the monster I thought I had hidden finally came out," she said, referring to the public scrutiny and judgment she faced after her separation.
Moving Forward
Despite the challenges, Jackie continues to push forward. She has launched a YouTube web series called 'Toxic,' which explores the everyday experiences of people in relationships. Jackie Matubia's story is one of resilience and determination, showing how she continues to rebuild herself and her brand.
