IAN NJOROGE WAS MOLESTED BY POLICE DURING ARREST, COURT TOLD
On Tuesday, the defense team for Ian Njoroge, the driver accused of assaulting a police officer, made shocking claims that he was molested by police officers during his arrest. The molestation was said to be so bad that Njoroge fainted two times.
The defense lawyers, Duncan Okatch and Vincent Lempaa, presented these allegations before Magistrate BenMark at the Milimani law courts,
Okatch and Lempaa described, “They actually molested him, in his own mother’s house for two hours, until he fainted two times.”
The defense detailed further brutal treatment and assault of the 19-year-old.
“The complainant assaulted Njoroge in his own vehicle. What the complainant did to him in that car, I can say he was manhandled by the complainant,” Okatch stated.
“At the police station he went through a beating ordeal, so that the clothes he had were bloodstained. And the police shamelessly took pictures of that.”
A short video clip showing Ian Njoroge being interrogated was played in court. The prosecution used this footage to highlight how officers insulted him during the interrogation.
Ian Njoroge Charged
Njoroge, a first-year Civil Engineering student at a the Technical University of Kenya, pleaded not guilty to charges of robbery with violence, causing grievous harm, and resisting arrest.
The incident took place on Kamiti Road in Kasarani, where Njoroge was seen assaulting Corporal Jacob Ogendo, 55, during a traffic incident.
According to Njoroge’s mother, the police officer demanded a Sh10,000 bribe, which Njoroge tried to negotiate to Sh5,000. But the officer was unrelenting, which greatly angered Njoroge, resulting in violence.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) requested the court to detain Njoroge for three more days to complete the investigations.
“The investigating officer was assigned the matter yesterday and had limited time to prepare the statements, obtain expert reports, and present the file to our office,” the prosecution argued.
“We object to his release on bail and request three days to allow the police to submit the affidavit.”
The court granted the prosecution one day to detain Njoroge at Industrial Area prison. During this period, he will be escorted to Kenyatta Hospital and accompanied by a parent.
